ICYMI: New Poll Shows Texas is Ready for a New Governor

Updated: Apr 4, 2022

A brand-new poll shows Beto within just two points of Greg Abbott

AUSTIN, Texas- A new statewide poll released Friday showed Beto O’Rourke gaining on Abbott in the race for Texas governor. According to a Texas Lyceum poll, voters are nearly evenly split between Abbott and O'Rourke, with 42% choosing Abbott and 40% picking O'Rourke.

The narrowing margin indicates that Beto O’Rourke has made significant progress in his campaign to take back Texas and to take down failed governor Greg Abbott. O’Rourke has focused on solutions-based policies instead of the divisive rhetoric and political theater Abbott and other Texas Republicans have been relying on to motivate an extreme base of voters steeped in racism and hate.

Texas Democratic Party Chair Gilberto Hinojosa released the following statement on the recent poll findings:

“Beto’s gains are a clear sign that Texans are ready for a new governor. They want solutions, they want to have the kind of lives they’ve earned and that they deserve. They want healthcare, good paying jobs, and a governor who is willing to fight for a better life for all Texans and not pander to an extreme group of democracy destroyers and liars.

“Beto is about unity and working to build a better Texas. He is about solutions that will transform the lives of people in our state. And even after the millions of dollars Abbott has spent on spreading his lies and divisive messaging through advertising, this latest poll shows that Texans are smart enough to see through Abbott’s political show and will not support a spineless candidate or party who continue to blame everyone else for the countless problems they have created. Voters are saying: no more deflecting and no more scapegoating-we want better.”

“Everyday until November 8th, Texas Democrats will continue to work towards voting out Abbott and other Texas Republicans hell bent on destroying our democracy and taking away our freedoms.”
